September is still a very hot month for Hong Kong with temperatures up to 28 °C on average and only going as low as around 26 °C. However, rainfall is usually a lot lower in September than it is during August at an average of 288mm rather than August’s very high 445mm on average for the month.
The same is true about the number of rainy days during September which is down to 15 days – so roughly half the month is likely to be a fine and dry day. This means that humidity should be lower too making it a little bit more of a pleasant time to visit and do active outdoor activities.
Events in Hong Kong in September
The Mid-Autumn Festival can fall between September and October but in 2011 it falls on the 12th of September. This is a very colourful festival that celebrates harvest time and also the biggest, brightest moon of the year. It also commemorates a 14th Century uprising against the Mongols. In a cunning plan, the rebels wrote the call to revolt on pieces of paper and embedded them in cakes that they then smuggled to compatriots. Lanterns are often lit during this festival and special Moon Cakes are eaten too.
Another great festival during September is the Monkey God Festival! This falls on the 13th of September in 2011 but varies each year. The Monkey God is a mischievous and playful god that first appeared in Pilgrim to the West, a novel dating from the Ming dynasty (1386 – 1644). Years ago, during the Monkey God Festival, a possessed medium would receive tributes from followers and run barefoot over hot coals and then climb a ladder of knives and remain unhurt!
Today, though, people celebrate the birthday of the Monkey God by burning incense and paper offerings as tribute. The festival takes place at the Monkey God Temple which was originally located in Sau Mau Ping Road in Kowloon. It is now relocated temporarily to Pao Tat Estate at Po Lam Road due to urban development.
