Weather in Hong Kong in May

With minimum temperatures of 23 °C, May sees Hong Kong really begin to warm up and can reach up to around 19 °C on average. With rainfall as high as 330mm on average throughout the month, you can expect plenty of tropical-style showers and lots of humidity in between.

Hong Kong is famous for its mists that can descend on the city and make visibility from tourist hot spots like Hong Kong’s harbour and Victoria Peak, poor. Don’t let this dissuade you from a visit however, as there are plenty of activities you can still do during May, and the mist may even add to the atmosphere and make some great photos!

Events in Hong Kong in May

From Friday April 8th to Saturday July 16th 2011 there is the Conductors’ Festival of Hong Kong 2011. This is organised by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and takes place at various venues, but predominantly Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui and Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall, Central. This fantastic music festival has varying costs for admission at: HK$150, $250 and $380.

Also in May is a celebration for the birthday of Tam Kung, another important patron of seafarers believed to bestow safe voyages and happiness. Tam Kung Temple in Shau Kei Wan on Hong Kong Island is the place to be on the 10th May 2011.

The Cheung Chau Bun Festival is also on the 10th May 2011, and so is Birthday of Lord Buddha! So it’s a great time of year to visit. Cheung Chau Bun Festival is a week-long festival with street processions, dancing and costumes galore!
