December isn’t the coldest month of the year, but temperatures are at 18 °C on average which contrasts to the summer’s peak temperatures of just over 30 °C. With temperatures falling to 15 °C at night, you should make sure you prepare for feeling a little chilly and pack a jacket or a sweater for going out at night.
Rainfall remains relatively low at 35mm for the month, and the number of rainy days is likely to be the least for the entire year at just 4 days on average.
Events in Hong Kong in December
Known in Chinese as the Dong Zhi Festival, Winter Solstice is the second most important festival of the Chinese calendar and falls on the 22nd December in 2011.
Dong Zhi is the day when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest and has the longest night of the year. Traditionally it is a time for family reunions and when farmers and fishermen gather food in preparation for the coming cold season. The longest night of the year is celebrated in style and is a time to put on brand new clothes, visit family with gifts and to laugh and drink deep into the long night.
Christmas also falls on the 25th of December and so Hong Kong could be a magical place to celebrate with friends, family and loved ones.
