The climate in Hong Kong during the month of June is very similar to that of May in that it continues to be humid and hot. Some days you might find that there is some rain and others there will be some sunny days, but generally it will feel muggy and may not be easy to take part in active things such as sports outdoors.
If you’re prone to health issues around pollution, then it’s recommended that you avoid the humidity by staying indoors where most houses and buildings have air conditioning allowing you to do things such as shopping and dining out in restaurants with relative ease.
The hottest it gets in June on average is 33 degrees Celcius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) which can be a little too hot for some. At night, there is little let up in temperatures as they are unlikely to dip below 23 degrees Celcius (73 degrees Fahreneit) so make sure that you book accommodation with some air conditioning so that you can sleep comfortably. Experts say that ideal temperatures in bedrooms should be around 17-18 degrees Celcius, so you may find it hard to sleep during the night without those vital air conditioning units!
Events in June 2011 & 2012
During June there is the annual Dragon Boat Festival or also known as the Duanwu Festival. The festival is held on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. In June 2012 the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 23rd June 2012. The activities for this festival include eating rice dumplings, drinking realgar wine and of course, racing boats! There are often some sunken boats during the races, but as it is such a hot month in Hong Kong, noone really minds getting wet as it’s a great way to cool down! This would be an ideal festival for all the family. This is now a public holiday for mainland China.
Don’t forget that the Conductors’ Festival of Hong Kong will still be running during 2011 for those who enjoy live music and takes places at a variety of places including the Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui.
In the middle of June, on the 17th and 18th 2011 there was also the music event A Dialogue Between a Guqin and a Stradivarius at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall, Central. Tickets for this cost between HK$150 and $380.
